Artist Faves: Charlotte Hayward

Charlotte Hayward is a hair and makeup artist who works primarily in the film industry but also within fashion, editorial, red carpet and celebrity. Specializing in beauty makeup and leading ladies, Charlotte has spent years travelling for work and trying new products and techniques.

Recently, Charlotte was the hair and Makeup supervisor for the Stunt 2nd Unit on  the summer hit Jason Bourne. Supporting Frances Hannon who headed up the entire project, Charlotte was in charge of keeping an eye on all the action scenes and traveled between London, Tenerife, and Las Vegas.

These are Charlotte’s go-to Sigma faves for natural beauty and easy application:

High Caliber Lash Mascara: Gives a more natural lash effect which is always my go to look on a movie. It keeps lashes thin and defined but lengthens them and so opens the eye by fanning the lashes out
E34 Domed Utility: One of faves for contouring and blending in the socket of the eye! I now can’t do my eye makeups without them!
E06 Winged Liner Brush: Best liner brush! keeps its shape so you can get a neat line when using a liner pot. The shape also helps you create the perfect wing or subtle flick
F06 Powder Sweep: This is a great small powder brush for the eye area
Spa Mat: So great to have with you to put in the sink at home or in a hotel room on location. The texture of the Mat really helps to clean the brushes quickly. Paired with a brush soap which is my favorite way of cleaning them it makes for a quick and efficient clean up!

Catching up with NZINGHA

5-20-16_Nzingha_blogTaking a break from her busy schedule, Sigma PRO makeup artist NZINGHA gave us a brief look into her makeup journey last week and a peek at what’s to come.

‘Music is all around me! It’s been the backdrop for everything I’ve ever done in the beauty business. My 25+ year journey as a pro makeup artist started in the music industry. Being on music videos and tours working with recording artists like Prince, Diana Ross, Janet Jackson, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz, Beyoncé, Destiny’s Child, Brandy, Mary J. Blige, Christina Aguilera, Sean “P Diddy” Comes, Missy Elliot, D’Angelo, Faith Evans, Lil’ Kim and more. I’ve also worked with film actors Will Smith, Terrance Howard, Mo’Nique, Gabby Sidibe, Queen Latifah, and countless others.

Currently, my work can be seen on several TV shows including Billions, POWER, and a new Netflix Original Series named ‘The Get Down’. My newest project, ‘The Get Down’, is a music inspired TV show where we’ve gotten to play with period makeup set in the 70’s-80’s.

On today’s shoot we are doing 70’s-80’s drag queen makeup! We pulled out all the glitter, shimmer and high drama makeup! It was just glorious to see all of the Artistry in one room. Rhinestone eyebrows glittery fuchsia blush and lots of disco music!

Today was day one of shooting the history of drag ballroom competition where “Vogueing ” is in order. So having to recreate some of the makeup of Drag’s legends was a bit of challenging because there were certain colors they used which aren’t available anymore. Our call time today was 5am which means I leave my home about 3:30 am, I arrived to set at 4:30, set up my station, making sure I have everything exactly where I need it to be. I take a 15minute breakfast and then after… let the show begin!

The makeup room we’re set up in today is home to 20 Makeup Artists and 20 Hairstylists and we had 200 extras! It was a mix of drag makeup and regular 70’s period makeup so the principal actors of course were first priority…all I can say is glitter was flying everywhere, lots of big show hair and neon ruffled gowns too. This shoot felt like was doing music videos all over again. All we needed was a black light for the neon makeup some of the actors were wearing. I’m normally the DJ in the makeup room I played everything from Donna Summer to Madonna. Even though it was a 10-hour shoot, the time flew by.

Being a freelance artist has allowed me to explore almost every medium, from working as a beauty editor for VIBE Magazine to doing makeup for film, TV, music, fashion and stage productions. I have focused on my pro MUA blog for the last 4 ½ years, The Glad Squad Files, where I share my advice for aspiring artists. Artist is a title that comes with a certain amount of freedom of expression from day to day, second to second.’

‘What I like best about my Sigma brushes is the even distribution of makeup. My male clients prefer to wear makeup only when necessary, such as leveling the skin tone under harsh studio lighting. Therefore, when my guys do wear makeup they want a light, balanced application. The gentle bristles of the Sigma brushes allow me to apply just the right amount of makeup, which prevents caking and blotching on the skin. Simply, the BEST!’ – Kristan Serafino
